Titan Briefs

Girls Soccer

The girls soccer team began their season slowly with three ties. The Titans tied Loyola, Naperville North and Downers Grove in close match-ups. However, they ended this streak with a 2-1 victory over New Trier, followed by a win over rival Maine South.

According to junior Janelle Flaws, the win over New Trier was especially exciting because it was so early in the season and South is one of few teams to beat them three consecutive years.

“It was amazing,” senior Emily Shaw added. “The last time we were on that field was last year when we lost to St. Ignatius in the super-sectionals, and beating them so early in the season showed that we can really do it.”

With this momentum the Titans acquired three more wins in a tournament in Springfield, but the girls’ hot streak was cooled when they suffered their first loss of the season to the Evanston Wildkits April 22.

Boys Track

At their last invite the Titans placed fourth and hope to find an edge on rival Evanston in their next meet at GBS. The boys have had success in the sprints, the hurdles and the distance.

The boys were led by their 4 x 800 relay team consisting of Jeff Takaki, Zack Avila, Bobby Mette and Charlie Reighard this past weekend at Lake Forest.

“We are doing great this season with numerous records set, and very successful indoor meets,” Varsity 400-meter runner Sam Gabuzzi said.

The Titans hope to send junior Colin Hepburn and seniors John Misek and Matt Narasimhan to State.

Girls Water Polo

The girls water polo team recently made a splash in the brand new Natatorium. Leading the team to an 11-6 record this season are seniors Mallery Boczek, Sarah Dunk and Sarah Park.

“I am proud of the improvements the team has made since last season,” assistant coach Kelly Timson said. “We do not have any real standouts, but rather each and every girl in the pool is contributing a great deal to our success.”

The Titans’ April 16 game against New Trier was cancelled due to a bad ventilation system. However, they still defeated GBN in a close match, ending 7-6. The Titans were not as forceful against Loyola as they were easily defeated in a 15-2 loss, with their two goals coming from junior, Laura Moderhawk.
In the past week, the girls defeated both Vernon Hills and Maine South before falling to New Trier Monday.
