After many attempts to foster interest, a new Adventure Club is being introduced at GBS. The sponsors of this club are Tim Monahan, Physical Education teacher, and math teacher Brian Schmalzer.

Monahan said, “The students have been trying to start this for a long time.” He also said that there just haven’t been enough students interested in joining. There are many showing more interest now, like junior Andrew Underwood, club president.

Underwood agrees and thinks it will work out because there are now two sponsors and three student board members. They are much more committed to planning activities and having meetings.

Just like every other club has had to do, Adventure Club sponsors and leaders are going through the process to make the club official.

“First, we had to get a bunch of signatures and send it through the SAO just to get the idea approved. Next, we have to create large amounts of media attention so people will join the club. Right now we have about 15 members signed up; the minimum amount of people we need to register is 25,” Underwood said.

Adventure Club meets every Tuesday at the rock wall in the Field House at 3:30. Underwood encourages people to come out and join because it is a lot of fun. In order to remain a club next year they need at least 25 members to join by the end of this year.

Schmalzer explains, “Adventure Club is not only for recreational purposes, but also educational. It teaches those who want to know terms of the outdoors, what it takes to cook outdoors, experience low impact and no trace camping, and all of the essentials.”

Adventure Club is planning a trip to Vertical Endeavors, a climbing wall in Warrenville. Other event ideas include camping, kayaking, canoeing, white water rafting, hiking, skiing and snowboarding.

Schmalzer said, “Even if you don’t know anything about these activities, come out and give it a shot because this club is meant for trying new things.”

“This club sounds really fun. I would join if it became a big thing. The trips sound really cool, and I would like to get better at a lot of that stuff. I rarely have opportunities to do the kind of things that they are talking about,” senior Avis Jason said.
