Junior high is over and high school has begun! To make this transition, freshmen attended High School 101 Thursday, August 21, where the students got to look around and learn about their new school.

Peer group, Student Council, and pep club leaders gave the incoming freshmen tours of South and answered any questions they had.

Senior Jack Haben said, “We tried to show them where most of their freshmen classes would be and where their lockers would be.”

Senior Pat Lawrie additionally said, “We also showed them the good bathrooms and bad bathrooms.”

Many students felt this advice was helpful.

Freshman Maureen Maginot said, “Actually going to high school 101 really helped because I was a complete stranger to the whole building and the tour made it a lot easier.”

Even so, some advice wasn’t learned at High School 101.

“I don’t remember them talking about peer group as much though, and I know a lot of my friends are upset they didn’t sign up because they thought it would just be a waste of their lunch time,” said Maginot.

In addition to some missing peer-group information, certain school destinations also weren’t learned by all.

Freshman Ryan Smith said, “I wish they took more time at high school 101 to explain how the link works; it would have helped me get around easier the first day.”

Freshman CiCi Hoogland also said, “I wish they told us which cafeteria is which. I was pretty confused.”

One peer group leader, senior Alexa Mazza, pointed out that sometimes over the course of the day, some information is conveyed by the leaders but not necessarily heard or remembered by the freshmen.

Although some information may not have been given at High School 101, it still was very helpful for many students.

Additionally, upperclassmen and teachers lend some helpful advice. “Sneaking out for open lunch is not worth the consequences,” junior Kristy Hidy said.

Furthermore, Daniel Hicks, social studies teacher, said, “Get involved; it really helps you manage your time. Also don’t be afraid to ask for help, whether it be from a teacher, staff member, or upperclassmen… don’t be afraid. Oh, and join the chess team!”
