Paradox took place March 13 and 14. This year’s show was based off of a superheroes theme. The show was comprised of live comedic skits and musical performances. All of the money made from the show is being donated to benefit the bone cancer foundation as well as Sam Cipolla, a GBS alumnus who has been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer.
Sophomore Joe Lewis and Freshman Mimi Dybczak were selected to be a part of the IHSA All-State Group Interpretation Cast. GBS’s Group Interpretation team placed ninth in the state with their performance of “Radio Days” under the direction of English teacher John Knight. Lewis and Dybczak were two of the forty students selected throughout Illinois for the all-state cast.
The Volunteer Center of Northwest Suburban Chicago presented GBS junior Katelyn Jo Hofstetter with a Caring Hearts Outstanding Volunteer Award Tuesday, March 18. Hofstetter was named the 2008 Outstanding Youth Volunteer of the Year in the Northwest Chicago suburbs. South’s community service club, Interact, which is made up of junior and senior students, nominated Hofstetter for the award. Hofstetter was selected as the nominee out of over 200 Interact club members for her commitment to helping others and for her participation in various community service projects like a community paint-a-thon, a shoreline clean up, and babysitting for children with special needs.
Speech Team state champion Nate Beasley and Speech coach Scott McDermott were interviewed Tuesday, March 11 by ABC News for a Diane Swayer special episode, which is scheduled to air on April 9. The special will focus on “The Last Lecture Series,” a speech given by a university professor as if it were the last lecture he would ever give. In August 2007, Carnegie Mellon professor Randy Pausch delivered the speech one month after he was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer. Pausch’s speech focused on his beliefs about living life and was directed at his three children. It quickly became a motivational and inspirational phenomenon throughout the country. Beasley placed first in Oratorical Declamation with his performance based on a condensed version of Pausch’s piece, “The Last Lecture.” Beasley and McDermott will discuss the impact that Pausch’s piece has had on them and on young people as a whole.
