The crowd is silent. Each swimmer is in her lane ready to start the race, waiting for the beep. And they’re off!

And the 2007 Glenbrook South girls swimming and diving team got out of their lanes quickly to a grab an early 6-0 record.

From wins against Libertyville, Deerfield, and Glenbrook North to taking first place at the Spartan Sprint Classic, the Titans are exceeding expectations.

At the Classic, sophomore Kelly Hagerty finished in first place for the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.52 seconds.

Along with Hagerty, the 200-yard Freestyle Relay team consisting of senior Co-captain Daniela Cubelic, junior Susan Bolt, and sophomore Jillian Cordes finished first out of the eight teams in the relay with a time of 1:39.48.

The girls’ swimming team isn’t the only group that made noise at the Classic. Glenbrook South’s girls’ diving team also had a stellar outing as sophomore Lisa Bolle and senior captain Ashley Fromm grabbed sixth and seventh place respectively.

™It was a really good outing. We went to keep winning on both levels [JV and varsity],∫ said Fromm.

As a season best, Fromm had her highest score of 202.20 in the girls’ one meter diving event at the Glenbrook North dual meet.

As the season progresses, all Fromm can look forward to is the light at the end of the tunnel: Sectionals.

“I want to make all my dives consistent and score well on all my voluntaries (required dives),” Fromm stated. Both Fromm and Bolle will dive at Sectionals.

Back in the lanes, Swimming Head Coach Kelly Timson is keeping the momentum going.

“Everybody has their individual goals and if we work to achieve them, we’ll be in a good place for the rest of the season,” Timson said.

Both swimming and diving teams have meets coming up against New Trier and Evanston, two of the hardest opponents in the CSL South.

“Our goal as a team is to get good times at these meets but not necessarily win. We want to keep improving times but not worrying about what happens in these dual meets,” Cubelic said.

As for Cubelic, a returning state champion in the 200 Freestyle Relay, she has her goals set in mind when the question of state is brought up.

“This will be my fourth year returning to state, and it’s unique because I’m going to attempt a race I’ve never swam: The 200 Freestyle. I’ve been working really hard to get better at this race because I want to be an individual state champion,” Cubelic said.

Nov. 17, the weekend of IHSA State Finals, seems like a long time away, but both teams are already preparing to send girls down state to bring home the gold for GBS.

This preparation comes from improving on scores at various dual and tri meets. Both teams had an invitational two weekends ago at St. Charles.

“This was our first year going to [St. Charles] because we usually have Loyola scheduled for that weekend,” said Hagerty.

Hagerty’s girls were to compete against other elite teams.

“The top teams in state were there and we wanted to finish in the top three,” said senior co-captain Barbara Beidler.

Sure to never disappoint, the Lady Titans did just as they hoped for and finished in third place. Up next for South is a meet tonight against Evanston.
