This spring, three of Glenbrook South’s very own teachers won the Outstanding Teacher Award from the National Honor Society. The teachers were Matt Whipple and Benedict Hussmann from the Social Studies Department, and Brenda Field from the English Department.

Field explained that students made the nominations for the award. She had received a letter saying she had been nominated in the spring of 2006.

Field stated, “I felt incredibly touched that the student had acknowledged what I have done. It means the world to me that the student took time [to nominate me].”

Field and Whipple explained that teachers teach because they hope to have an opportunity to touch students’ lives, but rarely know if they have accomplished that. For Field, being nominated for this award validates what she is doing.

A student who had already graduated from GBS nominated Whipple. He learned of his nomination when a student congratulated him for it.

He stated, “I was very surprised. It felt good because I knew I made a connection with the student [who nominated me].”

When Hussmann, who instructs History of World Civilizations and AP US History, found out, he also said he felt good about having won.

Jackie Penzell, a sophomore student of Field stated, “I definitely think she deserved the award. She works so hard and without her, Yearbook would be nearly impossible.”

The GBS community is very proud of these teachers’ achievements and is honored to have these teachers represent the GBS family.
