The Lady Titans have wrapped up the postseason, collecting a regional championship en route to a three-point heartbreaking loss to Lake Zurich on Tuesday night.
The team, led by Coach Steve Weissenstein, was 16-11 in the regular season. In the CSL South Conference Tournament, the squad finished third behind New Trier and Maine South, who tied for first.
The Lady Titans destroyed their early-playoff opponent, St. Viator, by a score of 57-30. The team came out strong on a 5-0 run in the game’s first minute, with a layup from Danielle Bemoras and a three-pointer from Ariana Mazza. The team struggled to distance themselves from their opponents early in the game, but were able to to cruise to an easy victory.
The Titans did not play this well, however, in the beginning of the season. The Titans were just 8-8 before an important tournament over winter break. Since then, the Lady Titans have been 8-3.
Senior Danielle Bemoras celebrates the team’s regional championship by cutting down the nets.
Much of this recent success can be attributed to the play of forward Danielle Bemoras, the Toyota High School Athlete of the Week on February 2. On January 26, Bemoras went on a tear, pouring in 29 points against Evanston along with six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. She followed it up the next day with 20 points, ten rebounds, and three assists against Lake Forest.
The girls had trouble against the top teams in the conference. The Titans lost at home against Maine South on February 2, 56-44. Weissenstein was disappointed with the loss, stating, “We really battled Maine South. We were down just 6 with 3 minutes to go, and had an opportunity to cut their lead to 4, but we couldn’t finish the game.”
A week later, the Titans lost to New Trier, 57-26. Despite these two losses, the girls battled to a respectable 5-5 conference record.
This team has just four seniors in Bemoras, Kathryn Donnellan, Mazza, and Alex Nabolotny, who played in the team’s first nine games before learning she would miss the remainder of the season with a back injury. The Titans have been able to attack both on the offensive and defensive end. Mazza and Erin Cepa are the team’s best three point shooters, and Donnellan, Bemoras, and Caitlin Staniec control the interior.
Weissenstein said of the senior class: “These four girls are great kids and have worked a lot over the past few years on the varsity team. They have really added a lot to the basketball program in general at GBS.”
The team beat Hersey, before bowing to Lake Zurich to end their season.
