The Glenbrook South High School mens soccer team is off to a solid start following a run to the state quarterfinals last year.

They have an overall record of nine wins, five losses, and three ties. They have lost three of their conference games and won against Evanston. They will need some strong performances in conference play to end the season.

Men’s soccer team members take in the action duringn their Tuesday match again Glenbrook North. The team heads into conference play on the brink of an outstanding season

Invites have shown great potential. At the annual 8-team invite GBS hosted, they lost the championship game to Grayslake 3-1. At the Hononegah Indian State Cup they went 2-1 in the prelimanaries, barely missing a chance to play in the elimination rounds.

Briggs Campbell leads the team with seven goals and 16 points while Nick Coulson’s six assists top the team. They help lead the team’s balanced attack. Tallis Ingram leads goaltenders with five wins and five shutouts.
Head coach Jim Wolter observes, “The players are a strong, cohesive group and have understood the coaching staff and team tactics well.” The majority of the players played on the junior varsity team last year, so many players had already begun developing into a team unit.

Wolter believes that if the team improves at understanding roles and playing as a team they can be one of the top three squads in the division and make it to the sectional finals. This would give them a chance at avenging last year’s nail biting 1-0 loss to Wheaton that ended the season in the quaterfinals.

The team knows that when they reach the playoffs the game changes completely. Coulson says, “It is like two seasons; you have conference games then playoff games. The intensity is much higher in the playoffs.”

Coulson feels that this year’s team can do just as well as last year’s. “We can get just as far as last year, we are just as good. We just need to find a way to get it in the back of the net. If we can get past New Trier and Glenbrook North, then we can go far,” says Coulson.

The GBS mens soccer program is on the rise and is a threat to be feared in Illinois high school play.
