After leading the Titans to one of the best seasons in the history of Glenbrook South men’s basketball, head coach John Meyer is entering early retirement. Coach Meyer has led some of the most successful teams in his past years of coaching
Most memorable of course were the last two years. Meyer guided the Titans to back to back conference championships.
However, Meyer says that finishing undefeated in the conference this season was the most impressive part of his career.
“I would take the most pride in going undefeated in conference this year.”
Despite his recent success, Coach Meyer decided that this was the time to step down because of family reasons.
“It had nothing to do with the people here–It was really my family. I love coaching, I’ll miss it, but I’ve got to take care of my family first,” says Meyer.
Before notifying the rest of the school, Meyer had a meeting with his players to break the news to them. The team already had known that he wanted to spend more time at home, but at the same time they were taken aback by his decision.
Senior A.J. Riddel summed up the player’s feelings, “I was surprised but at the same time I wasn’t–I knew he had three young kids, and there is a lot of responsibility there.”
But the players know and respect all that their former coach did for them. “He’s a good coach, good guy and he really got to know us well,” junior Jake Kalnitz said.
Riddel added that, “he always got the most of us.”
Coach Meyer will continue to help the Titans on the court. He will remain at the school, and has told the juniors that he will be there to help them and even go to some of their games.
He will also help out through the footprints he left on the returning players. Kalnitz, who plans to be with the team again next year, knows that while Coach Meyer may be gone, his legacy will live on for years.
“We know we will keep the tradition that he started,” Riddel said.
