This year’s boy’s varsity basketball season was one for the record books. By beating Dundee Crown on March 3, they became the third team in boy’s basketball history at Glenbrook South to win a regional championship.

They were CSL South conference champions and were the first team in GBS history to have a perfect 10-0 record in conference. The team also set the GBS record for most wins in a season with 25. Their final record for the season was 25-5.

Junior Jake Kalnitz recalls the season as one that will never be forgotten. “You dream big, and you hurt even worse, but our season was all about the great time we had together. We worked like a family on the court and were even closer off the court. This was a season we’ll never forget.”

Their season came to an end in the sectional championship game against Glenbrook North. It was the third time they played GBN this season, and unfortunately they could not pull out a win to advance to super-sectionals.

Two Titan players were able to continue their seasons a little longer. Senior Benny Lalez advanced to state in the three-point competition and junior Danny Monckton advanced to the state tournament for the dunk contest. Monckton placed fourth in state.

Early in the year the Titans got of to a strong start, winning their Thanksgiving tournament at Fenton High School. They beat Naperville Central in the championship game to win the Chuck Mitchell Thanksgiving Tournament. Another big win for the team was against Waukegan, where they slid by with a 64-62 win over the Bulldogs. Going into their winter tournament the Titans were seeded first, but they ended up coming in fourth place in Elgin Holiday Basketball Tournament.

The Titans say goodbye to 9 seniors this year: Jeff Ryan, Kevin Bulger, Brennan Keller, Benny Lalez, Pat Reyes, Louis Decosmo, AJ Riddel, Mike Haben, and Blake Buzzard. Jeff Ryan will be going to Northwestern to further his basketball career and Kevin Bulger will be attending Columbia University to continue playing basketball too.

With a memorable season behind them, the Titans can only look ahead to next winter and hope for another successful season.
